Pizza is one of the most ordered foods on DoorDash and Uber Eats, so the grid is full of it. Scroll through the pizzerias near you and most photos look the same: a round pie shot from straight above, red and white, a little shiny. On a phone they blur together. The customer chooses on price or on distance, which is not where a good pizzeria wants to compete.
What sells a pizza on camera
- The crust. A Neapolitan cornicione with leopard spots, a Detroit edge of caramelized cheese, a grandma square with a crisp bottom. The crust is what separates your pie from the chain, and an overhead shot hides it.
- The slice. One slice pulled a few centimeters from the pie shows the layers and the structure. Two slices gone tells the customer the pie is being eaten.
- The char and the bubbles. Hard side light makes them readable. Flat light makes them disappear.
- Time. Cheese has about three minutes before it sets and turns matte. After that, no editing brings it back.
The famous cheese pull works in a video. In a still, it often looks like a blur of yellow. It is one frame of many, not the whole shoot.
The angle: 45 degrees and overhead, both
The overhead shot is useful for the full-menu flat lay and for square formats. For the individual pies, a lower angle, 30 to 45 degrees, with the light from behind and the side, shows the height of the crust and the texture of the toppings. A board or a stone surface under the pie, a knife or a server at the edge, basil added fresh at the end. That is the shot that makes someone stop scrolling.
Where pizza photos go wrong
If a pizzeria never uploads its own photos, the platform can use a regular order: the pie in the cardboard box, the cheese stuck to the lid, the slices slid to one side. If a photographer comes from the app, he gets two hours, the restaurant’s tables and every item on the menu. The pies come out of the oven while he shoots the wings, and by the time he gets to them the cheese has set. Nobody is doing anything wrong. The format does not leave minutes for each pie.
A shot list for a pizzeria
- The three to five best sellers, each fresh from the oven, at 45 degrees with the crust forward.
- One slice pulled, for the specialty pie.
- The full lineup overhead on one surface: the menu banner for Google and the website.
- Appetizers and salads: burrata, garlic knots, wings.
- Dessert: cannoli, cheesecake, tiramisu, because add-ons raise the average order.
- A short video of the oven, the peel and the cut, for Reels.
