A bridal boudoir session has one deadline: the wedding. Everything else bends around it. The photos need to be shot, chosen, retouched and, if you want an album, designed before you hand them over. Here is the timeline I use with brides in Palm Beach County, from the day you get engaged to the morning of the wedding.
The short answer
Book the session 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding. That leaves room for the shoot, a calm week to choose, retouching, and the gift itself, whether it is a printed album or a private gallery. Engaged more than six months out? Shoot early anyway. Nothing about the session depends on the date, and you will have the photos while you still have time to enjoy them.
6 to 12 months out: decide and pick the date
This is the quiet stage. You decide it is something you want, you tell the photographer and you pick a window. Do not tie it to your final dress fitting or to the diet you promised yourself. The session works at the body you have now.
- Choose who it is for: him, you, or both of you.
- Choose where: your house, or a hotel suite. Hotel suite boudoir in Palm Beach is the most popular choice for brides who live with family.
- Read what happens on the day: your first boudoir session.
8 to 10 weeks out: book and plan the pieces
Pay the $225 deposit, sign the session agreement and pick the date. Then gather the outfits. Three looks is the right number for 90 minutes.
- One white or ivory piece. It reads as bridal without a veil.
- One black or deep color. It gives the set contrast.
- One of his shirts, or a robe. The easiest outfit and often the favorite.
Buy lingerie that fits today. Bring the shoes you will wear on the wedding night, if you already have them.
6 to 8 weeks out: the session
Hair and makeup first, then 90 minutes of directed posing. The session is $450 with hair, makeup, wardrobe help and your first selection the same day. You see the best frames before you leave, which settles most nerves about the final result. Proofs follow within 24 hours.
Choose a weekday morning if your fiancé works from home or the house is rarely empty. Choose a hotel suite if you want a night away with no one asking questions.
5 to 6 weeks out: choose your photos
You get the full proof gallery. Pick favorites with a clear head, not on the first night. Most brides keep 15 to 30. The collections are Esencia $895 (15 retouched photos), Musa $1,695 (30 photos and an 8×8 album) and Icono $2,795 (every photo, a 10×10 album and a 16×20 wall art piece), payable in 3 installments. The full breakdown is on the boudoir photography prices in Palm Beach and Miami page.
3 to 5 weeks out: retouching
Retouched images arrive 7 days after you choose. Natural skin, clean light, no plastic. If you want an album, this is the window to pick the cover and the order of the pages. Albums start at $350 as an extra, and they are included in Musa and Icono.
The week of the wedding: the gift
Three ways it usually goes:
- A printed album he opens alone, the night before or the morning of.
- A private gallery link sent with the card at breakfast.
- One framed print in the hotel room, with the rest in the album.
It is not a posted gift. These photos are private. Nobody sees them unless you decide it.
If the wedding is closer than six weeks
It still works. Shoot as soon as you can, choose fast and ask for the retouched images first. Gallery delivery is quicker than an album, so a digital gift is the safest choice with a short runway. For the details of how I work with brides, see the bridal boudoir photographer page.
Questions
How far ahead should a bride book boudoir?
Six to eight weeks before the wedding is the sweet spot. Earlier is fine. Later works with a digital gallery instead of an album.
Should I shoot before or after the dress fitting?
It does not matter. The session does not use the dress. Shoot when the date suits you, not when the fitting says so.
Can the session be at the hotel where we are getting married?
Often yes, but the property has to allow photography, and I confirm that in writing before your date. A separate suite a few days earlier is easier.
How much does it cost?
The session is $450. Collections run from $895 to $2,795 and can be split in 3 installments.
